Lee Bae is a Korean contemporary artist whose practice examines the material nature of charcoal and its relationship to time, transformation, and the processes of formation and dissolution. Born in Cheongdo, Korea, in 1956, he moved to France in 1990 and has since developed a multidisciplinary practice spanning painting, sculpture, and installation. His work occupies a distinct position at the intersection of traditional Korean materials and the formal language of contemporary abstraction.
Developed from the 1990s onward, his Issu du feu series is constructed through the cutting, assembling, and polishing of carbonized wood. Fragments of charcoal, each possessing its own density and grain, are brought together to form layered surfaces that reveal variations of black through the absorption and reflection of light. These works extend the pictorial surface into a sculptural structure, negotiating the boundaries between two-dimensional composition and three-dimensional form.
In subsequent series, including Landscape and Acrylic Medium, Lee expanded his investigation into the relationship between material density and pictorial space through the accumulation of charcoal powder, pigments, and layered media. The granular qualities of charcoal, variations in surface texture, and subtle tonal differences became integral to the formal organization of his compositions. This sustained engagement with material gradually developed into a broader exploration of physical gesture and the act of mark-making.
In his Brushstroke series, Lee employs charcoal-based black pigment and restrained calligraphic gestures to register movement and duration across the pictorial field. Departing from the densely constructed material surfaces of his earlier works, these paintings foreground the fluidity of the line and the immediacy of physical action. While maintaining a consistent engagement with charcoal, this development extends his inquiry into the relationship between materiality and immateriality, the body and space.
Although Lee's practice intersects with the aesthetic traditions of Korean Dansaekhwa and East Asian ink painting and calligraphy, it resists classification within a singular art-historical framework. Emerging from a sustained investigation of charcoal, his work continually reconfigures the boundaries between painting and sculpture through processes of repetition, accumulation, combustion, and transformation. Developed between Paris and Seoul, Lee's practice has established a distinctive artistic language within the broader discourse of international contemporary art.
