Kim Yisu is a Korean contemporary artist whose practice explores the boundaries of sensation and perception through the layering of color, repetition, and subtle visual differences. Born in Seoul in 1974, she studied painting at Sungshin Women's University and continued her studies at Pratt Institute in New York, where she earned her master's degree, before completing her doctoral studies in fine arts at Sungshin Women's University. Drawing on the formal traditions of Minimalism and abstract painting, her work engages with the indeterminate space between the visible and the invisible.

A central conceptual reference in Kim's practice is inframince, a notion introduced by Marcel Duchamp to describe differences and intervals so subtle as to be nearly imperceptible. Within her work, this concept provides a framework for examining the relationships between color and light, material and space. Eschewing recognizable imagery and narrative composition, her paintings are constructed through the repetition of lines and the layering of color fields, revealing subtle variations within seemingly uniform structures.

In her earlier works, Kim employed translucent acrylic panels and layers of colored tape to construct material depth and visual complexity. Her subsequent paintings on canvas extend these investigations through horizontal and vertical lines and the accumulation of translucent colors. Through processes of repetition and layering, color fields intersect and permeate one another, producing shifting visual relationships that respond to changes in light and the viewer's position.

While her approach may be considered in relation to post-Dansaekhwa Korean abstraction and the aesthetic traditions of Minimalism, Kim's practice extends beyond the formal principles of repetition and reduction. Subtle chromatic variations and indeterminate boundaries arising from the accumulation of materials lend her surfaces a distinct perceptual density, expanding the possibilities of painting at the intersection of abstract structure and immaterial perception.

Kim has exhibited internationally in Seoul, New York, Tokyo, and Rotterdam, among other cities. Her work has been included in exhibitions such as Minimal Variations at the Seoul National University Museum of Art and Contact, Boundary, Confusion at the Total Museum of Contemporary Art. Through an ongoing engagement with repetition and difference, materiality and perception, her practice continues to investigate the formal and sensory possibilities of contemporary abstract painting.
