Kim Tschangyeul

b.1929 ~ 2021

Kim Tschang-Yeul was a pivotal figure in the development of postwar Korean abstract art, whose sustained engagement with the motif of water droplets explored the relationships between representation and materiality, time and memory. Born in Maengsan, Korea, in 1929, he emerged as a participant in the Korean Art Informel movement during the 1950s. His subsequent years in New York and Paris brought him into contact with diverse developments in Western modern and contemporary art, contributing to the formation of a distinct pictorial language that took shape in the early 1970s.

The heavily textured surfaces and gestural compositions of Kim's early paintings reflected the expressive tendencies of postwar abstraction. During his time in New York in the late 1960s, his practice shifted toward geometric abstraction and the Phenomenon series, in which organic forms and spatial illusion became increasingly prominent. These investigations culminated in a significant transition with the emergence of his water droplet paintings, first presented at the Salon de Mai in Paris in 1972.

The Water Drops series developed through the meticulous depiction of water droplets upon the flat surface of the canvas. The illusionistic transparency of the droplets and the material presence of the pictorial ground establish a tension between representation and physical reality. Ranging from isolated droplets to densely repeated arrangements, variations in scale, spacing, and composition generated an extensive range of pictorial possibilities within a singular motif.

From the 1980s onward, Kim's Recurrence series introduced Chinese characters derived from the Thousand Character Classic as integral elements of his compositions. The juxtaposition of text and image established new relationships between the repetition of signs and the illusionistic representation of water. This development was accompanied by continued experimentation with painting surfaces, including hanji (traditional Korean paper), canvas, and newsprint. The ephemeral appearance of water droplets and the persistent repetition of written characters introduced distinct temporal dimensions into the structure of his paintings.

Emerging from Korean Art Informel and evolving through his engagement with European postwar abstraction and representational painting, Kim's practice established a distinctive position within the history of contemporary art. His nearly five-decade investigation of water droplets constituted a sustained exploration of the pictorial surface, illusion, and the relationship between material and image, securing his place in the international development of Korean modern and contemporary art.
